The challenge of business growth and decarbonising

Key insights from PM Group’s Environment and Sustainability seminar focused on the road to Net-Zero

Balancing business growth with the urgent need to decarbonise is a significant challenge. This topic was a key focus of our recent Environment and Sustainability Breakfast seminar.

“Becoming Net-Zero will not happen overnight. It requires detailed strategy planning, targeted investments and the right guidance” said Barry O’Sullivan, Sustainability SME and Environment and Sustainability Department Manager, with PM Group in Cork.

At our “Path to Net-Zero” seminar, key industry developments and actionable steps were explored. Our experts identified some key takeaways:
  1. Grant funding is available, not just for equipment and process improvements, but separately for feasibility studies relating to decarbonisation
  2. An energy balance is a critical first step for decarbonisation planning, but also for sizing technologies such as heat pumps
  3. Correct sizing and equipment selection is critical in successful heat pump design and integration. However, Process Safety considerations of natural refrigerants and their associated hazards must be included for a low-GWP design
  4. Annex 1, the EU guidelines for GMP in the pharma industry, promotes sustainability through a number of mechanisms. These include encouraging a shift towards closed systems and enhancing energy efficiency in HVAC design, including challenging industry-wide typical air change rates
PM Group's Environment and Sustainability experts were joined at the event by Colm Martin and Patrick Donoghue from SEAI’s ExEED Programme. They provided valuable insights on funding opportunities and strategic planning for decarbonisation.
