As industry demands ever faster and more cost effective delivery of biotech manufacturing facilities, Biophorum has published a white paper on ‘Improving the biomanufacturing facility lifecycle using a standardized, modular design and construction approach’.

Changing mindsets

“The paper highlights the distinction between modular design and modular construction which is not well understood within the industry”, says Austin Lock, Pharma Technical Director at PM Group and co-author of the paper. “Taking a single-use mAbs facility example, the paper identifies how adopting the core fundamentals of modular design and modular construction can enable significant benefits for a standard manufacturing facility project.

Facilities of the future

The paper creates a vision of how a future biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility might look. Rather than starting with a blank sheet every time a new facility is needed, it recommends looking to standardization and a more modular approach to design and building. This can bring benefits including faster use of a new facility, reduced/deferred capital expenditure, more rapid product launches as well as increasing a facility’s lifecycle by adapting it for different needs.
